Built by the city of Ely with assistance from the Public Works Administration, the Ely Community Center was designed as a multi-use civic space. Within its walls were the public library, auditorium, meeting rooms, offices, and a cafeteria — bringing together education, culture, and daily life under one roof.
As a result, the building became the focal point of Ely’s social life, hosting events, meetings, and moments that shaped the community for generations.
Architectural Heritage
PWA Moderne & Art Deco Influence
The building’s architectural detailing reflects the Public Works Administration Moderne style of the Art Deco period. Its strictly symmetrical front façade, smooth stone surfaces, and use of glass block speak to the era’s emphasis on progress and civic pride.
Low-relief sculptural panels featuring stylized figures further define the structure’s character, making it a lasting architectural landmark in downtown Ely.
A New Era
Honoring the Past. Looking Forward.
In 2026, the building entered a new chapter as Hotel Elysium. Thoughtfully restored and remastered, the hotel preserves its architectural and historical significance while offering a modern interpretation of comfort, design, and hospitality.
The spirit of gathering remains unchanged — only the experience has evolved.
